Breastfeeding is the main way through which the baby feeds from the mother. It is essential as the newborn can get their nutrients from their mother’s milk. Breastfeeding is graceful and something a mother enjoys watching when her baby is feeding. Breastfeeding comes immediately after the baby is born. It is important to understand that the mother to the newborn has been carrying the baby in the womb for nine months and would need adequate support after giving birth.
Pregnancy support for breastfeeding mothers is one form of support that is essential for new mothers.
First Contact Support
First contact support is got from the hospital where the mother has delivered. Normally after delivery, the mother is handed the baby for skin to skin contact and breastfeeding. It is a policy in most hospitals and is also recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The WHO recommends that as a form of pregnancy support for breastfeeding mothers, they should be aided to initiate breastfeeding as soon as possible after birth.
Newborns receive most of their nutrients from their mothers breast milk. Breast milk is full of immune properties that newborns benefit from. Therefore, and as a requirement, newborn mothers are required to breastfeed their child. It is unnecessary to feed the baby on any other fluids or formula unless the doctor advises.
No Breast Milk
In some cases, newborn mothers may experience the lack of milk, therefore, being unable to breastfeed their child. Sometimes the phenomenon may take a few hours or extend for a few days. It is normal but given the case that the breastfeeding mother has taken nine months to carry the baby to term, it may be stressful for them. The notion that they are unable to feed their baby can bring about anxiety. Despite the intervention of the doctors or the nurses, you as a partner, father, friend, or well-wisher should be able to comfort the newborn mother.
Helping them to be positive about the situation and encouraging them that the phenomenon is normal can help alleviate postnatal depression. This, in turn, improves the bond the mother has with her baby.
Breastfeeding at Home
Breastfeeding at home is more relaxing as compared to public spaces. Hence, mothers are more relaxed while in such an environment. However, there may be some challenges a newborn mother faces while at home. This will require that they receive some form of pregnancy support for breastfeeding mothers.
In most cases, mothers would require a nursing room where they can breastfeed. Mostly this is in the baby’s room. During breastfeeding, you could help with some chores. This gives the mother time to bond with her child.
In some cases, breast milk may not be enough or may not comprise all the nutritional elements that the baby needs. Apart from natural remedies, you could consider supporting your breastfeeding partner with lactating or vitamin supplements. These will help with producing more milk or providing deficient nutrients in breast milk.
However, before taking any supplements, you should seek an audience with your doctor to determine what kind of supplement you need and what dosage to take.
