Scientists at the University of Melbourne say that no other treatment has achieved what omega-3 has achieved so long after the treatment has stopped. Those at risk of schizophrenia were four times more likely to suffer psychotic episodes up to 7 years after 3 months of taking omega-3 supplements.
What The Recent Omega-3 Study Concluded
Researchers began their studies by analysing the effects of omega-3 in young people who are at high risk of developing schizophrenia. 41 people took part in the 12 week program.
After almost 7 years, many of these participants no longer experienced severe functional impairment or early development signs of psychosis.
The study concluded that teens and young adults who take fish oils can reduce the risk of developing mental health disorders. Even psychiatric drugs couldn’t compete with the omega-3 pills, which have no serious side effects.
Another alternative to omega-3 are the antipsychotic drugs, tend to have serious side effects such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction.
Schizophrenia affects an estimated 1 in 100 people in the UK while a quarter of the population will experience a mental health problem in the course of a year.
Why Are Omega 3 Pills So Effective?
As previous studies have discovered a higher intake of omega-3 and omega-6 has reduced psychotic symptoms, let’s look at the benefits of taking this apparent wonder drug:
- Can reduce stiffness and joint pain
- Can boost the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs
- Lower levels of depression and boosts the effects of antidepressants
- Aids in visual and neurological developments in infants
- Some studies have shown to reduce the symptoms of ADHD, though not conclusive
- Some research suggests omega-3 helps to protect against Alzeihmer’s disease, though not conclusive
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces triglycerides
- Improve artery health by reducing plaque buildup and blood clots in arteries that lead to the brain
- Reduce the chance of abnormal heart rhythm
- Reduces likelihoods of strokes and heart attacks
- In modest doses, reduces cardiac deaths and in high doses reduces nonfatal cardiovascular events
Benefits Of Omega-3 & Vitamin D Supplementation
The synergy of omega-3 and vitamin D has a positive effect on the serotonin system.
- Omega-3 and vitamin D supplementation results in a substantial reduction in coronary calcium scores and slowed plaque growth
- Coupled together, these supplements help improve cognitive function and behaviour
- Many sufferers of mental illness are deficient in micro nutrients, particularly vitamin D and omega-3
- Vitamin D and omega-3 supplementation is a safer therapeutic treatment to serotonin enhancing drugs, drugs which have negative side effects
