Vegetarian Footballer

This marks day 12 of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, and the excitement and competition grow by the day. In the past week, there have been 21 matches, nation versus nation, and as tempting as it is to dive into a recap of each game, it would probably take us a while. Therefore, we’ll have a look at some of the spectacular matches that were played last week.

Belgium vs. Panama

On Monday 18th June, Belgium kicked off their campaign with a 3-0 win against Panama. Panama put up a spirited fight in a gritty first-half display. They managed to build a front that even the best players of Belgium’s team could not penetrate. After the unfruitful first half, Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku, Eden Hazard and Dries Mertens returned for the second half rejuvenated. Just two minutes into the second half, the Napoli man had fans roaring when he fired a sumptuous volley past Jaime Penedo.

Poland vs. Senegal

The two teams played on 19th June, and in a 1-2 win over Poland, Senegal triumphantly made it through their first match at the tournament. Senegal’s M’Baye Niang in the 60th minute scored his first ever goal for Senegal, which was also his first shot on target at the World Cup. It’s worth noting that Senegal have won 3 out of 6 of their World Cup matches, the best win rate of any African nation in the tournament.

Argentina vs. Croatia

Croatia made a statement when they started their campaign off at a high note, with a victory over Nigeria, and their impressive win over Argentina on Thursday. This was Croatia’s first victory in five attempts against South American nations at the World Cup. This match also marked Argentina’s heaviest defeat in the first round group stages of the World Cup. Croatia midfielder Ante Rebić scored in the 53rd minute, while Luka Modrić and Ivan Rakitić each scored to give Croatia their victorious win over Argentina.

Morocco vs. Portugal

It is undeniable that the Portugal side revolves around Cristiano Ronaldo, its start player. Just five days after he save his team in the 3-3 draw with rivals Spain, he proved himself again as the European champions’ savior with his early goal that market their 1-0 victory over Morocco. He scored a diving header inside just four minutes, connecting with Joao Moutinho’s close cross from a corner quickly taken.

Nigeria vs. Iceland

On Friday, Nigeria made their first victory in a World Cup tournament by more than one goal since their 2-0 win over Greece in 1994 at their first ever World Cup game. In the 49th minute, Nigeria striker Ahmed Musa scored, finishing a quick counter-attack with some style. He scored again in the 75th minute, sealing the deal for Nigeria.
