The Wimbledon tennis tournament is underway, and on its fifth day, we’ve seen the two sisters face different fates in their respective rounds. Venus Williams was beaten by Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens 6-2, 6-7 (5), 8-6. While Serena Williams defeated Kristina Mladenovic 7-5, 7-6 (2) advancing to the last-16. Bertens win over Venus marked her first ever top-10 win on a non-clay court. It also put her in the fourth round that will be held at the All England Club for the first time in her career.
Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams became the 8th of the top 10 seeds to get a knock out in the Wimbledon tournament. The 38-year-old ninth seed made a sluggish start to the contest and her body language in the first set contradicted her frustration. Bertens remained calm and composed, closing out the set with an ace. Williams in due course attained some rhythm in the second set as the two traded breaks twice. Bertens missed a chance to serve out for the match at 5-4 up. This was followed by a tie-break where William won two mini breaks to have a 6-2 advantage over Bertens; however, she missed her winning chance to close the set. In the thirds set, the two exchanged early breaks before Bertens missed two break points in the eighth game. Williams managed to save two match break points on deuce at 7-6 down; however, she ended up striking a return low into the net, handing Bertens the win in 2 hours 40 minutes.
Serena Williams made quite the comeback in a proper win over France’s Kristina Mladenovic. The 23-time Grand Slam champion had a child, and this made her comeback and win that much more impressive. Her win advanced her to the Wimbledon fourth round. Many women’s seeds have already left the tournament, but the stars are aligning for Serena. Next, she will face fellow mom and world number 120, Russia’s Evgeniya Rodina. By reaching the fourth round, 36-year-old Serena has matched her showing at June’s French Open which was her first Grand Slam since she had her daughter in September last year.
Serena and Venus: Plant-fueled Green Machines
Venus and younger sister Serena Williams are the definition of superstar athletes. Venus went vegan in 2011 when she was battling Sjogren’s syndrome and kept at it. She has seen countless victories on the court. Serena, the more dominant of the two in the Singles game temporarily adopted the vegan diet to support her sister and has been at it ever since. The two sisters occasionally give in to some of their guilty favorites, like sushi, but they both follow a mostly raw vegan diet, especially during the tennis season.
Venus, the stricter follower of her vegan diet, said that veganism is a great lifestyle, mentioning that it is important to ensure that one should also keep an eye out for the supplements they put in your body to accompany the diet. If Venus and Serena Williams are winning at their vegan diet, why shouldn’t you?
