Menopause, this one word can strike fear into many women, why? Is it because it signifies a certain transition period in a woman’s life? Or is it because it is very much so a taboo subject still? Either way, we still try to find ways to alleviate the symptoms… especially those nasty hot flushes! Did you know there are certain rules and foods you can eat to help combat these symptoms?
Did you know blood sugar could play a major role in keeping those hot flushes at bay? By skipping meals, you allow you blood sugar to dip, which can play with your already erratic hormones! Also the surge in adrenaline you get when you become hungry can be enough to trigger a hot flush. Sugar and refined white carbohydrates such as biscuits, cakes and pastries are best to avoid. This is due to them causing insulin levels to become erratic, which does have an affect on the hormone levels.
So what food can we eat to reduce the symptoms of Menopause?
Reverting to the above rule about sugar, it is best to limit your fruit intake to no more than two pieces a day. This is because fruit is a natural source of sugar. It is recommended to include foods that contain the Amino Acid, Tryptophan. Tryptophan aids the manufacturing of serotonin, a chemical that boosts mood and in some cases, helps control sleep and appetite. Foods that are excellent sources of Tryptophan are; Turkey, Oats, Cottage cheese and Legumes (such as peanuts).
Oily fish! Having two portions of oily fish in your diet a week can help counteract the unwanted menopausal symptoms of dry hair and skin also cracked nails, fatigue and low mood. Alternatively, you can get your intake of omega-3 oils by consuming nuts and seeds if the fish doesn’t entice you.
Opt for low-fat dairy products. Back in 2013 there was a major study proving that women who consumed semi-skimmed milk products, low fat cheeses and yoghurts delayed their menopause by 3 and a half years. It is believed that the skimmed cow’s milk contains enzymes that boost the amount of Estrogen in a woman’s body.
However you decide to counteract your symptoms, here at Body By Nature we have a wide array of natural supplements that can aid your ailments.
