2016 is underway and that can only mean one thing, the countdown for The 2016 Summer Olympics has begun.
From the 5th to the 21st of August, athletes and spectators from around the globe will travel to Rio, Brazil for this years eagerly anticipated games. These sporting events will take place across 33 venues spread across four regions of the city namely Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro, and Maracanã.
From the 7th to the 18th of September, The 2016 Paralympics will be held, which will be during Rio’s wintertime. This will be the first Paralympic Games to be held in South America.
During 11 days of 23 different sporting events, a total of 528 medals will be awarded to the victorious competitors.
The 2016 Summer Olympics
Now affectionately referred to as Rio 2016, has been heavily scrutinised from the apprehension in regards to the completion of venues to the uneasiness of the level of security that will be provided.
Although there are reservations about the safety level for the visitors and residents of Rio de Janeiro, the three levels of government see it as an opportunity to transform the safety systems of the city and are sure the games will be a catalyst for these.
Another concern is the water pollution. During an Olympic test event in August 2015, multi-resistant germs infected a German sailor. This is believed to be due to wastewater from the City Hospital running into the sea near Olympic venues. Officials have promised to make the water safe ahead of the games taking place.
Despite the above athletes are now well into their training regime to excel in the 306 events scheduled for the two weeks.
One thing is for sure, come the 5th of August. The world will look to Rio as the Opening Ceremony commences.
